“This series of paintings is inspired by isolation in times of Covid 19, Brexit and the attempt to establish a new normal in the way we connect with others.
The paintings reference the prose work NO MAN IS AN ISLAND, written by English poet John Donne in 1624. The phrase 'no man is an island' expresses the idea that human beings do badly when isolated from others and need to be part of a community in order to thrive.
The paintings of Archipelagos invite to reflect on the connections that we have to others even when in isolation.
The actual islands on the paintings are created from pieces scraped off my studio floor during the first UK Lockdown in 2020, they are layers of paint that I have used over the past decade. I chose to use this material to create a reference to the archaeology of actual islands whilst they are pieces of my own archaeology, my island.”
